Week 14 - Ben weller

Ben Weller

South Korea photographer, based in Busan. He focus on industry, labour, people and culture.

 Reflections:

 Ben Weller uses natural light alot in his photos, even if the sun is shining brightly, he would be "brave" enough to take his shots. Many people are usually afraid to take photos with bright sunlight, they would prefer taking photos in the evening or morning so as to capture the sunset and sunrise moments. I realise he likes to create a gradient colour in the background which enhance the colour of his image. That's something I would want to work on, balancing the colours of my images in future. I really like Ben Weller photos, I feel like he takes photo with his heart.

Week 13 - David Hobby

David Hobby

An American photographer and the author of a lighting blog that promotes lighting techniques. He's a photojournalist with The Baltimore Sun. His blog was named one of the "25 Best Blogs of 2010" by Time Magazine.

 Reflection:

I like how David Hobby uses lighting in his photos to make a difference to the subject. It makes the photo really interesting rather than a dull normal looking photo. Even if the background may be dark, he still enhance the light on the subject itself to bring the focus of the viewer to it. In photography, the correct lighting is very important and I feel that i am still not very confident of capturing the right lighting so I feel that I need to improve more on that in my work.

Week 12 - Robert Capa

Robert Capa
A hungarian war photographer, photojournalist who is also the companion and professional partner of photographer Gerda Taro.

"If your photographs aren't good enough, you're not close enough"

Reflection:
Robert Capa is a very daring person to me. He could take such nice photos despite a war is happening makes him really brave. People would probably be running for their lives, protecting their love ones when a war is happening yet he can still take such photos. Capturing such precious moments during a war, the touching moments and how they fight for their lives together. I like how his images speak to the audience, it's like he freezes the time to tell a story of how people are like during a war.

Week 11 - Eric Kim

Eric Kim

A street photography currently based in Berkeley whom studied Sociology and combined his passion in photography to make statements about society through street photography. Initially when he started, he had difficulty finding on the net on the approach of street photography. Soon, because he lost his job which gave him the opportunity to travel the world and teach street photography workshops to those who wants to conquer the frear of doing street photography.

Reflection:
I like doing street photography and I have the fear of taking photos of strangers so I prefer taking backgrounds objects or situations. The style in his photos being very unique captivates people to look into his pictures more; as though his photos are talking. That's how I feel when I see his photos even with a simple silhouette as the main focus. I wish to overcome the fear of taking photos of strangers like him in the future because human expressions are interesting in many ways and you can see the story behind the people's expression.

Week 10 - Brian Duffy

Brian Duffy

English photographer and film producer best known for his fashion and portrait photography of the 1960s and 1970s. He began freelancing as a fashion artist for Harper's Bazaar where his first came in contact with photography.

Reflection:

 Brian Duffy is a well-known fashion photographer that takes photos for top fashion magazine. He applied for jobs related to photography because of his interest which is different from what he studied and seize any opportunity he gets. Despite being different from the usual photographers, he tried his best to make his work stand out with his own unique style. He once gave up on photography and even attempt to burn his images away but was saved by others. He leads a special and hard life which was then made into a documentary. I feel that he worked so hard for his passion which the spirit we should all learn from. Fashion photography is something rather unusual from the usual photographers as they need to enhance the feel of the design of the clothing to the viewers which I personally think it's a little more challenging.

Week 9 - Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz

An American potrait photographer whom photography skills develop while working various job. Started her career as a staff photographer and launched Rolling Stone magazine which she then got promoted as chief photographer.

 Reflection: 
 Annie Leibovitz launched Rolling Stone and her photos are enhanced with the contrast between the subject and the background. Working with taking photos for magazine, she is able to achieve so much till who she is today. The colours in her photos are rather bold, allowing her to win many awards. She has captured portraits of so many artist, capturing the most enduring images of people in her life. Portraits photos aren't my strengths so I wish to improve and be like her, learning how to make simple photos stand out. I like the way she portrays a bold kind of feeling in her images...

Week 8 - Steve McCurry

Steve McCurry
An American editorial photographer best known for his photograph "Afghan Girl" which originally appeared in National Geographic magazine. He originally planned to study cinematography and filmmaking but ended up with a degree in theater arts. However, he became interested in photography when he started taking photos for penn State newspaper.

Reflection: 

Steve Mccurry has a style of his own and he likes to take photos of humans in their natural state showing how each and every living conditions are different, focusing on their faces filled with emotions. He took photos in dangered areas where photography or any leak information are not allowed.  

“Most of my images are grounded in people. I look for the unguarded moment, the essential soul peeking out, experience etched on a person’s face. I try to convey what it is like to be that person, a person caught in a broader landscape, that you could call the human condition.”

I feel that Steve is very daring and I like the way how he shoot the most natural state of a human. Even with a simple potrait, the picture talks alot about the person or even their personality, culture etc. I wish to be able to achieve something like that, not afraid to take pictures of humans and show the beauty of nature in humans.

Week 7 - Jeremy Cowart

Jeremy Cowart

Starting out as a painter, Jeremy fell in love with the creative process. He then began to take pictures to bring texture into his design work and slowly realise that photography was his true passion. He slowly earned the respect of artists, photographers etc. with his photos. He take photos for celebrities like Taylor Swift, Kelly Clarkson etc.

 Jeremy gained the acknowledgement from people in such a short time and he didn't regret changing from a painter to a photographer. He has achieved so much through the years and even earned so much names to his works. He even released 3 books. Using his creativity and knowledge in graphic design to his work so as to add colours to his images. Jeremy also tries his best to contribute to the society with his photos and make sure he shares his stuff with people all over the world. It's amazing how he can achieve so much through the years which I feel we should really learn from. His passion and hard work brought him to where he is today.
